SSA+S Odyssey of the Mind

Team Places 13th IN THE WORLD!

With 45 teams representing schools from all over the United States, Europe, Asia, and Central America, our outstanding SSA+S Odyssey of the Mind team earned an impressive 13th place at the International OM Competition at Michigan State University on May 30.

Our team beat schools from Singapore, Poland, South Korea, Mexico, and Canada, as well as schools from Houston, Texas, Flagstaff, Arizona, and Wilmington, Delaware.

The team faced a devastating setback when its’ main balsa wood structure was destroyed by the airport security X-ray machine while en route to Michigan. Last minute efforts were made to rebuild the structure, but time limitations prevented successful completion of this task. Fortunately, the team had a back-up structure, so the team was still able to compete in spite of its setback.

During the Spontaneous part of the competition, the team was given a problem that required quick and creative thinking and only five minutes to come up with a solution. The team scored extremely well. The performance component of the competition required the team to present an original skit which had been written by the team in which the set, costumes, and props were designed and built exclusively by team members without any adult assistance. This was another area in which our SSA+S team excelled.

At the end of the day, the SSA+S OM team proved once again that we excel when it comes to creative problem-solving. Many thanks to team members Mallory Robinson, Haley Simmons, Iris Lopez, Jessica Zangara-Hinman, Will Friend, and Stephen Cole for their year of hard work and dedication. A special thank you to Ms. Susan Skedel, the fearless leader of this group.

Film festival moves into classrooms

Congratulations to Victoria Parisi

Date: March 31, 2010
by: Joseph Schneider and Victoria Parisi

Through Sarasota Film Festival's Outreach and Education Department, middle-school classes participated in the Classroom Critic program and screened official short films selected for the festival’s youthFEST.

Through the critics program, they learned the basics of film analysis and critical review. Four film reviews have been selected for publication from more than 430
completed student reviews.

This week, two seventh-graders review "The Mouse That Soared." Check it out at the Sarasota Film Festival at 12:30 p.m. Sunday, April 11.

Victoria Parisi
Sarasota School of the Arts and Sciences

“The Mouse That Soared” is about a young mouse that has the ability to fly and is even equipped with his own pair of makeshift wings!

Due to the death of his parents, he is taken into the care of two birds. They attempt to teach him how to fly. After many mishaps, he finally finds himself gliding among the clouds. He ends up at the circus where they take him in as their star!

The one scene that stuck out the most was the beginning when the flashback began. Someone said, “Your parents must be so proud.” The mouse starts to remember the fateful day of their death, while the man’s words are played over and over. It was very dramatic. The carnival music helped to bring us back to the present from the flashback.

This animated film has no real “actors” but digital animations and sounds. The director seemed to favor film techniques like medium shots and zooming in. Dissolves and fade-ins were also used.

Overall, this film is recommended. It is perfect for short periods of time, when boredom
finds its way in.

Entertaining, moving and very well put together, “The Mouse That Soared” gets two thumbs up!

Starting in February, we will begin SSAS Idol after school on Tuesdays.  The competition is very similar to American Idol.  The kids will audition for 3 judges, who will pick a top ten.  Mr. Stone will work with the finalists every week to help them prepare for the “show.”  At each weekly performance, then contestants will sing for an audience of students who stay to watch.  After the weekly performance, audience members will cast their votes (by paper ballot) and the remaining contestants will move on to the next week.  The contestants narrow down until we are finally left with our SSAS Idol.

March 16 Referendum Election Information

Basic election facts

On Tuesday, March 16, 2010, a special election will be conducted in Sarasota County. The ballot will include a referendum to allow the Sarasota County School District to continue a 1-mill levy to support public education.

The millage is not a new tax; it is a continuation of millage that is already in place. The referendum was originally approved in 2002 and renewed in 2006. The renewal will only authorize the district to continue the voted millage already in place.

Band Night

August 18th, 2009

6:00pm

I am pleased to offer a second band night for families, who may have been unable to attend our June Band night previously. It is my pleasure to invite you and your children to be a part of the SSA+S Band Program. We hope this will be the beginning of a long and successful association with music. All incoming 6th grade students have the opportunity to join the band at SSA+S.  No prior experience is necessary to become a member of the band.

If you have previously attended our band night in June, you are not required to attend this second offering. If you are unable to attend, but wish to have a band schedule, please fill out and return this form to SSA+S as soon as possible, to Kim Braun, Registrar’s attention, via email (kimbraun@ssas.org), fax 330-1835, postal mail or drop in person at the front office.

Band is a great experience.  There are many benefits and rewards for good band members and good musicians.  Please consider giving your child the opportunity to learn a skill that they can take with them throughout life.  An interesting fact you should be aware of is that students that are in good music programs show consistently higher standardized test scores.  Another little known fact is that a considerable amount of college money is given every year to band students, far more than is ever given to athletes. At the hands of a skillful teacher, band students are given healthy discipline, a sense of responsibility to the group, confidence in expressing themselves, and many other benefits. Please be advised that we currently do not offer a string section nor piano, as part of the band program.

Band instrument testing will be done at “Band Night”, Tuesday, August 18th, at 6pm in the SSA+S band room 26.  At this time you should start making the decision of what instrument to play in the band. We will be making a recommendation to each child that is interested in band, regarding what instrument to play. A representative from an instrument rental company will be present to inform you of affordable rental rates for various band instruments. Please do not purchase or rent a band instrument until a recommendation has been made, and after the start of the school year.  Upon completion of Band night, a request will be put in to amend your schedule, and your student will receive a new schedule in home room.

I look forward to working with you and your children this year and in years to come.

Tony Guiliano
Director of Bands
