Applications
for 6th grade through 8th grade, for the
August 2014-2015 school year, will be available online starting
August 1st – December 1st, 2013. After
December 1st, a lottery will be conducted to fill
vacancies in our enrollment, and results of the lottery will be
sent postal mail to all applicants on or before the second week
of January 2014.
Sarasota School of Arts and Sciences is
funded by the state of Florida, tuition free, multicultural,
public charter middle school, located in downtown Sarasota’s
Rosemary District. As a charter school, we can accept students
from all over Sarasota and surrounding counties.
A student must be in 5th grade or above to
apply for their middle school year of enrollment, during the
application window. SSA+S enrollment policies match state law
governing charter school enrollments. If the number of
applications received exceeds our enrollment capacity, a lottery
process will be conducted to fill enrollment vacancies in
accordance with State Statute 1002.33, subsection (10), article
(b), governing charter school enrollment policies;
(b) The charter school shall enroll an
eligible student who submits a timely application, unless the
number of applications exceeds the capacity of a program, class,
grade level, or building. In such case, all applicants shall
have an equal chance of being admitted through a random
selection process.
(d) A charter school may give enrollment
preference to the following student populations:
1. Students who are siblings of a student
enrolled in the charter school.
2. Students who are the
children of a member of the governing board of the charter
school.
3. Students who are the children of an employee of
the charter school.
The initial application serves to note your family’s interest
for enrollment in SSA+S, and it is used for contact purposes
only. It does not conflict with other application processes such
as County-Wide School Choice, other magnet program applications,
or private school registrations. We do not participate
in County-Wide School Choice. A McKay Scholarship is not
necessary, nor utilized at our school. State and local required
registration paperwork is not needed at the time of the initial
application submission. Further documentation will be requested
at the appropriate times. Receipt of the initial application is
not a guarantee of enrollment and is subject to the status of
our enrollment at the date of receipt of said application,
contingent upon review of the student’s specific resource needs
(where required), and based upon schedule availability. If the
number of applications received exceeds our enrollment capacity,
a lottery process will be conducted to fill enrollment
vacancies.
Sarasota School of Arts and Sciences offers enrollment to all
students that they can serve appropriately. Review of
discipline, attendance, and exceptional student education
records may negate enrollment at our school based upon an
inability to serve the student’s needs. Students whose
records are in violation of our student contract, as supported
by our Reassignment Form, and Charter will not be admitted.
Students that are expelled from a public school, are on a
settlement agreement, or on a deferred expulsion will not be
admitted to SSA+S during the duration of their expulsion.
The parents and/or guardians of a student who is not granted
reassignment may appeal to the principal, within 15 business
days, with a formal request letter and appropriate supportive
documentation. Failure to do so within 15 business days
negates any possibility of appeal.
Visits with our Registrar must be made in
advance and are by appointment only. General public,
informational tours are conducted by our Registrar and are by
appointment only. Students must be in enrolled in 4th
grade or above, to have a tour. Tours are limited to the student
and parent/guardian(s) only. We currently do not offer an open
house for the general public at this time. Student “shadowing”
is also not permitted.
