Digital Portrait

A quick look at taking and processing digital photos

 

Purpose

 

Ø      To introduce capture, storage, and manipulation of digital image data.

Ø      To introduce publishing software for insertion, enlarging and printing.

 

 

Setup

 

 

Ø      A digital camera

Ø      A good place to take the picture.  Look at the background and lighting.

Ø      A computer that will interface with the camera

Ø      Somewhere to store the image. (Make yourself a folder on the lab server in “Tech ed 2005 folder.”

Ø      Microsoft Publisher

 

 

How – To

 

Your portrait shall be about 5X7”. The procedure is:

Ø      Get to know the camera, and get a few shots of you.

Ø      Connect the camera to the computer

Ø      Cut and paste or save the images to your storage file, so that you can deal with them later.

Ø      You may retouch the photo with software or not.

Ø      Open Microsoft Publisher and insert your best image.  Using the rulers, get it as close to 5 X 7 as possible.

Ø      Make some sort of frame around it and place a title or caption on the page with your image

Ø      Save in your folder on the lab server, name it “Digital Portrait – your name

                                                                                                                                  

 

Evaluation (Grades)

 

There are two grades here that will be evaluated.

 

Ø      The portrait Layout (frame, background, etc.)……………6pts

Ø      The portrait Technical points (focus, accuracy, etc.)……..6pts


 

 

Business CardsAdvertising ourselves every day

 

 

Purpose:

Ø      To use tutorial wizard to setup and process a business card.

Ø      To insert an image onto the cards

Ø      To use Copy and Paste for multiple images.

 

 

 

Setup:

This assignment uses the wizard in Microsoft Publisher.  However, you will need to set up the card on a sheet that lets you have 10 on a sheet.  So, when you get to the part that asks for multiple cards on a sheet, say yes.  You may use a common logo or get / make one of your own.

 

Follow the instructions on the wizard layout.  You will need to ZOOM in later and change the layout a little, but it is easy.  Change it enough to have your picture on the cards too.  You will use the “insert” tab, and select “from file”.  Go to the folder where you have stored your image, and insert it.

 

Be sure to save this assignment as you go, as it gets bigger.

 

Make all your cards the same size, 2” X 3.5” is the standard.  Printing will be done at a later date.

 

 

Evaluation (Grades)

 

There are two parts to this assignment:

Ø      Business Card without your picture; ten to a sheet…………….12 points

Ø      Business Card with your picture; ten to a sheet………………...12 points

 

You will be graded for:

Ø      Correct information- Name, phone, logo, spelling, etc.

Ø      Card size- are they the same, and the right size?

Ø      Your picture placement on the card- Straight, right size, etc.

Purpose:  To be identified in the world.

 

 

Each of you will develop TWO ID cards that will include the following:

Ø      Your name, photograph, address, and telephone number

Ø      A reason for the ID card.  This could be a business or some other area of interest.

There must be a logo.

Ø      Be able to hang on you from a lanyard or pocket clip.

Ø      Be stored in your wallet or purse.

 

 

 


WHAT TO DO……

 

You have the following equipment:

Ø      Digital Camera

Ø      Microsoft Publisher

Ø      Paper Cutter

 

 

You need to design two cards as follows:

 

Photo Identification Card that:

Ø      You can display on your person.

Ø      Has your name, address, and phone on it.

Ø      Will either clip to your clothes, hang from your neck, or clip to your belt.

 

Wallet Identification Card that:

Ø      Is able to be put in your wallet or purse

Ø      Has the above information and your email address.

 

 

GRADING

 

Scoring is as follows:

 

Ø      All information correct and easily found……………6 points

Ø      Logo is neat and appropriate………………………...6 points

Ø      Both cards fit on one page…………………………...6 points

TOTAL……………………………18 points

INTRODUCTION:

            In the business world, charts of all types are used every day to show how things fit in our society compared to other things.

 

            Within this activity, you will learn how a flow chart can show the relationships in a family.  You will be using yours.  Be creative here!

 

 

ASSIGNMENT:

            Using a flow chart, show how you came from your family.  This is called a FAMILY TREE.

 

Ø      Use the real names (first name is ok) of parents, grandparents, siblings, and even step parents.

Ø      Use about 20 names or as many as possible.  Highlight your name.

Ø      Use arrows, boxes, lines, and circles to connect them all.

Ø      Be sure to put your name on the sheet or name it your name when you save it.

Ø      Put a title on the top of the page.

Ø      Save this document on the lab server under your grade, class, in the Family Tree folder.

 

 

SETUP

            You will need to quickly sketch out (with a pencil) your family tree on a sheet of paper. This step will help you later.

Ø      Access the PAINT program on your computer.

o       Pull down “Options”

o       Change “Image Attributes”

§         Portrait – Width 7.5 Height 10 inches

§         If you choose landscape then switch the numbers around

Ø      The tools that you will need are on the Palette on the left side of the display.

o       Play with them and find colors, line types, and other things you will need

o       Use the help menu if you need to.

Ø      See what it all looks like on paper

o       Pull down the zoom “view” menu

o       In this mode, you cannot make changes. Bummer.

Ø      Save as you go.

o       You may save to your file or directly where you are supposed to turn it in.

Ø      Printing will be done at a later date.

 

 

EVALUATION:

            You will be graded on the accuracy, neatness, and understandability of the page.

 

 

 

 

Scanner / Enlarger
 

 

 

 

 

 


PURPOSE:

 

You will work with the following tools:

Ø      Scanner:  You will select, scan, and save an appropriate color image.

Ø      Publisher Software:  You will set up the publisher page for large format 11X17.

 

 

 

WHAT TO DO….

 

Ø      GET A PICTURE from a newspaper or magazine, select an image that is no bigger than the palm of your hand.  Be sure that it is clear and free of wrinkles.

Ø      Scan it use the scanner in our room.  Save this image using the highest quality for this assignment on the Lab Server in your file.

Ø      Publish it using Microsoft Publisher and set the image to fit on 8.5 X 11” paper.  This is in the page set up and printer setup.  You may need to go to the printer setup first.  Be very careful to retain the correct image aspect ratio. 

Ø      Print preview This is important!  Use the print preview function to see if the image will fit the way you think it should.

Ø      Printing will be done at a later date.

Ø      Save this on the lab server under your grade level, class period in the Scanner / Enlarger folder.  Be sure to save it under your name.

 

 

 

EVALUATION (Grading)

 

Your grade will be determined by the following criteria:

 

Ø      Is the picture appropriate?

Ø      Is it clear and without serious imperfections?

Ø      Does it fill the paper correctly?

The Problem

Very soon, you will need to get a job.  Not just a simple, after school job, but a real one.  I know this is tough to “take”, but you should start looking at the job world right now.

 

The Assignment

The Occupational area is given on the score sheet.

 

You need to find Six (6) jobs that relate to that occupational area, and answer the following questions about EACH of the jobs.

 

What is the official title for the job?

 

What education is required?  Do you go to a school to learn this?

 

Where do people find this job?

 

What is the rate of pay?

 

Is this a job that you want to do?

 

The Format

This assignment will be done on a word processor.  You may use any software you want to make it look good.   It should be easy to read and understand.  You may also cut and paste the questions or type them but they must be included. 

 

Remember to include the source of your information.
